  • Restrain the animal
  • Stand beside hind leg
  • Lift tail, insert thermometer into rectum at least 5cm.
  • Allow one minute for mercury thermometer, or follow instruction for digital thermometer (usually until "beep")
  • Remove, record result and clean thermometer
