The farmer reporting system is continuous and ongoing. It has excellent population coverage, and because it is a passive surveillance system, there are few costs associated with the generation of the surveillance data. This system is one of the best ways of finding out about new or emerging diseases, and it can provide good evidence for freedom from disease. It can also be good for finding cases of disease. However, it is not particularly useful for determining prevalence of disease, although it can provide some idea about changing levels of disease in an area.
