Sentinel herd or flock surveillance involves the repeated testing of a group of susceptible animals that are strategically located in an area of high risk or importance. Sentinel herd surveillance tends to be very expensive, and not very well-liked by farmers, as the repeated sampling can be inconvenient for them, and they must keep the same animals for a long time. However, it can provide very good information about the presence or absence or spread of certain diseases in the area where the herd or flock is located.
