Prevalence is a measure of how much disease is present in a population at a particular point in time. This measure uses both the number of cases (determined using the appropriate case definition) AND the "population-at-risk", which is the number of animals (or herds, or flocks, or villages, whatever the case definition uses) that could be cases.
