After the officer completes their work, the used equipment should be, cleaned or eliminated/disposed (including medical equipment and materials used during investigation such as remaining cotton, syringes, vacutainer, etc.). The risk can be managed by burning, autoclaving or applying appropriate disinfectant on materials used and washing hands immediately with appropriate disinfectant, soap and running water.
