The proportion of animals that are susceptible to infection will have most influence over the amount of disease that develops in a population following introduction of a disease agent. If the population is mostly immune then introduction of disease will have relatively little effect. If there are many susceptible animals then introduction of the disease into the population may result in a large outbreak (epidemic).
